We are facing a national crisis. Unions are under attack. UE members and other workers are being illegally and secretively rounded up and shipped to other states and countries with no cause or due process. Hard-won human rights and collective bargaining rights are being taken away every day with the stroke of a pen. The labor movement must unite and fight back. UE can lead the labor movement and be a catalyst for change in this country.
Our slate will help our union develop a coordinated campaign to immediately organize locally, statewide, and nationally. We will create a robust member communication network and worker planning meetings on multiple scales to coordinate across UE locals to snap into action. We will share knowledge, resources, and toolkits and make them accessible to all UE locals so that locals have the materials they need and don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We will create a digital system to share event calendars so that we can support each other’s fights. We will unite with immigrant organizations, labor unions, climate justice organizations, faith-based groups, LGBTQ organizations, civil rights organizations, and all social movements to build a national coalition to make our country into one that serves people, not elites. As national officers, we will be present on the ground in UE locals’ fights to support them and rally our union behind them.
Americans see that both political parties are failing them. The time is ripe for alternatives to the corrupt and corporate two-party system. We will harness our collective anger to fight back on a massive scale and build a new political party to change our union and our country for the better.
Since it was first adopted in 1936, UE’s constitution has committed us to “form[ing] an organization which unites all workers on an industrial basis, and rank and file control, regardless of craft, age, sex, nationality, race, creed, or political beliefs, and pursue at all times a policy of aggressive struggle to improve our conditions.” We can not delay fulfilling this promise of a fighting union for everyone. This initial platform emerges from dozens of conversations with local union leaders, elected regional officers, and rank-and-file members, but it’s just a start. We want to hear from you about ways we can build and improve this union. At this moment, we have no other option but to fulfill our founding promise of Uniting All Workers. The workers united will never be defeated!
